Cluj-Napoca, Romania, one of the nation's largest cities and the capital of Cluj district. It lies on the Somes River, 200 miles (320 km) northwest of Bucharest, the national capital. Cluj-Napoca is the commercial and cultural center of Transylvania. Factories produce a wide range of products.
The city, known throughout most of its history as Cluj, was settled in the 12th century by Saxons. The Ottoman Turks conquered the city in the late 1500's and in turn ceded it to the Austrian Empire in 1699. Cluj was part of Hungary from 1867 until 1920, when it passed to Romania. Hungary reoccupied the city briefly during World War II.
