Epictetus (about 50–130 A.D.), a Greek Stoic philosopher. Like other Stoics, he resembled the Christians in his love of good and hatred of evil. He taught the desirability of wanting nothing more than freedom and peace of mind, and that even the gods could not mar the happiness of persons who rely on their own free will.

Epictetus was born in Phrygia, Asia Minor. He studied Stoic philosophy while a slave in Rome. After he won his freedom, he became a teacher. With other philosophers he was expelled from Rome by Domitian in 90 A.D. He left no writings, but his pupil Flavius Arrianus wrote down his lectures.
